New York taxi drivers to get first raise in 10 years, riders will pay 23% more

Im not a fan of yellow cabs. Some of them discriminate by not stopping for you, unless you have a certain skin color. Plus if they stop and ask where you are going, and say anything other than the airports or outside of manhattan, they play dumb and take a long traffic route to jump the fare up, or wont go at all.
One drove off cause we said the bronx.
First Time Visit to NYC Coming Up. I have a Taxi Question
Main Post:
I plan to take the subway occasionally but may also hail Yellow Cabs while there to get around.
Do most of these cabs take card? Or still mostly cash? Better to pay by cash for tips? Or can you tip via the card charge mechanism/service?
What are some general etiquette tips to remember? I've only ever used occasional ride sharing in my home metro of KC and driven myself (we don't have much for mass transit options here).
Thanks.
- A NYC rookie.
Top Comment: What are some general etiquette tips to remember? In other cities, you may hear the driver's life story during a ride, or be tempted to tell your own. Not like that in NYC (ok, you do get the occasional chatty yellow cabbie). It's "hello, I'm going to 38th and 6th" when you get in and "thanks" when you leave. Neither party typically talks to each other and that's fine. Obviously if some clarification about the ride is needed, you should speak up. If you hear the driver speaking in a low voice, often in another language, they are talking on the phone to someone else. This is fine and common, they gotta stay sane somehow.
New York City taxis fight for survival against Uber and Lyft
Main Post: New York City taxis fight for survival against Uber and Lyft
Top Comment: Fuck taxis. They screwed us over for decades with smelly rides, bad routes, overcharging, aggressive driving, poor behavior, refusing to take you where you want to go, taking forever to arrive when called... seriously, fuck ‘em. I’m glad the apps are eating their lunch.
NYC Taxi scam?
Main Post:
Flew to JFK AirPort recently and exited terminal 4 following a ‘NYC Táxi’. Super legit, apparently.
She told me the price for a cab from terminal 4 to anywhere in Manhattan was 83$USD. When I got in the cab, mid trip, the driver told me 97$USD due to toll and AirPort fees - whatever that means. After a 7 hour flight I agreed. When I arrived at the hotel front, he asked for a tip and I agreed on rounding to 100$ USD. Payed using my revolut card and account 100$USD on his payment terminal.
In the app it also appeared 100$USD for NYC Taxi.
Now it appears 280$ USD!!! What the hell happened? Thank you on advance
Top Comment: You need to report the taxi. Was it a yellow taxi?
New York City taxi - Are e-hail apps worth it?
Main Post:
What are people's opinions and experiences of the "E-hail" apps for NYC taxis? The apps they list on their official site (as of right now) are:
Reading the app reviews reveals a lot of users who experienced taxi drivers trying to skirt the system, take advantage of, or otherwise bull$#!t riders. I'm aware most people write reviews when they're unhappy, so I'm hoping to find some better feedback here!
Top Comment: I find curb decently reliable in busy desirable sections of Manhattan like west midtown, in harlem I never get picked up.
I am a 26 year old NYC yellow cab driver. Ask me anything
Main Post:
I'm not the typical New York City cab driver. I'm younger and I was born and raised in the USA. I went to prep school and four year university. I have been moonlighting, sometimes heavily, for 3 years. I'm working full time now until the end of the summer when I'm quitting for good. I work the night shift.

Have you ever had to kick someone out of a cab?
How do you hail a can in nyc without looking like a dumb tourist? What's the light mean?
Main Post:
Actually I don't care if I look like a dumb tourist.
I've been to NYC 100 times and cannot for the life of me ever remember if light on is AVAILABLE or NOT.
But I've actually had trouble getting a cab to stop in the past.... Not much but sometimes. Am I doing something wrong?
Top Comment: I just stand on the corner and when I see I lit cab, I just stick my hand in the air like I just don’t care lol
